PBK Boston Dinner Discussion Commemorating PBK’s 241st Anniversary

December 8 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Participate in Phi Beta Kappa’s Keys To Action Week celebrating the 241st anniversary of PBK.

What: Join members of Boston PBK for a dinner/discussion.

Guests of participants are welcome!

When: Friday, December 08th, 2017 at 7:30 PM

Where:  Christopher’s Restaurant and Bar, 1920 Mass Avenue in Cambridge, across from the Porter Square T-stop. The restaurant serves an assortment of fresh, healthy food, which is excellent and varied, as can be seen from the menu, available at http://christopherscambridge.com/.

How:  Simply show up, but please RSVP so we know how many to expect.
Parking can be found along Massachusetts Avenue north of Porter Square (and across the street in the shopping center parking lot at a very slight risk!).

The discussion will be around the question:

What is the role of an “aristocracy of the intellect” in a democratic society?

Phi Beta Kappa is an honor society recognizing intelligence and effort in college academics, then encouraging friendship, virtue, and wisdom among its members.

Is this elitist? Or is it the very essence of societal survival that the best are encouraged to come forward, acknowledge and develop their gifts with humility, take positions of leadership as necessary, and set an example that others might follow?

Our national secretary Fred Lawrence quoted philosopher Martha Nussbaum in the latest issue of the Key Reporter:

“[D]emocracy needs to learn from, and practice, philosophical dialogue, a way of conversing – and differing – about important issues that substitutes respect for arrogance, and patient probing for overconfident boasting.”

He also quoted Judge Learned Hand:

“[T]he spirit of liberty is the spirit which seeks to understand the minds of other men and women.”

Let us take the opportunity to apply this wisdom and, most importantly, to meet other PBK Boston members and friends. The topic and discussion are meant to be a jumping off point for an evening of stimulating conversation!

Please RSVP to thomas@pbkboston.org or to tlaage@hotmail.com.
